After these ramblings we went into Lenox to have lunch at the Haven Café & Bakery. I had peach/mango French toast and an apple/caramel chai tea. My husband had a Croque Monsieur with ham and gruyere on toasted sourdough and a diet soda.
Our afternoon visit was to Ventfort Hall, built by George and Sarah Morgan as their summer home. It is an imposing Jacobean Revival mansion that typifies the Gilded Age in Lenox.
Sarah, the sister of J. P. Morgan, bought the property in 1891, hired architects and had a house built that became a prime example of a home in the Gilded Age. Constructed of brick with brownstone trim, it has a long view to the south of Monument Mountain, with a long veranda out back. A thorough review of this amazing home hailed as “one of the most beautiful places in Lenox,” along with a lot more pictures, can be found here.
Also in town was the Norman Rockwell Museum.
The house above was originally a carriage barn that Rockwell bought in 1957, which he had converted into a studio to paint. The building was actually moved to the present site and set up as the museum it is today.
For our last night for dinner, we went to the Amici, an Italian restaurant in town. To find out what we ate and what happened, you can read the review, here.
After dinner, we went back to our B&B and enjoyed the last of our “iced” wine and reveled in all that we had done on our vacation. The next morning would only be a one hour drive to the airport.
All in all it was a good trip. We got to experience the Northeastern autumnal colors, and it was the sight of the Berkshire trees and vistas that will remain in our memories as the highlights of our trip.
